Indian middle-order batter Karun Nair recently opened up on not getting named in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy, despite sensational performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2024-25.
Nair hogged the limelight due to his credible form for Vidarbha in India’s premier 50-over domestic tournament, VHT. The right-hander slammed 779 runs in nine innings (six not-outs) at an average of 389.50, with five centuries. His best knock of 163* off 105 came against Chandigarh.
Karun Nair remained unbeaten on 88* off 44 balls in the semi-final against Maharashtra, helping the side to reach the final. Although, he could contribute only 27 in the final and Vidarbha lost to Karnataka to emerge as runner-ups, Nair still warranted a place in the side.
However, with tough competition in the top as well as middle-order, Karun Nair failed to make a comeback to the Indian team. In a recent interaction with Hindustan Times, Nair stated that the dream of playing for India again keeps him motivated to produce his best.
“Obviously, the possibility of an India comeback has to be on your mind. If you want to play for the country, you have to keep dreaming. There are these thoughts and dreams in the head but that’s just motivation.”
Karun Nair has played six Tests and two ODIs for the national team to date. After scoring a Test triple century against England in December 2016, the 33-year-old was dropped from the side after lackluster performances in the next three games.
Karun Nair’s form drew attention of chief selector Ajit Agarkar
Despite not getting a chance to showcase his talent for the Indian team, Karun Nair has surely piqued the interest of the fans and the Indian selection committee. During the squad announcement of the England ODI series and the Champions Trophy, chief selector Ajit Agarkar shared his take on Nair’s sublime form.
Interestingly, Karun Nair averaged 752 ahead of the Vijay Hazare Trophy final, which resulted in his name being discussed during the meeting for the Champions Trophy. However, Agarkar feels the chosen players also deserve a spot in the side due to their past performances. He said:
“I mean, those are really special performances and I mean someone who averages about 700+, 750 + or something, we did have a chat, no doubt about it, when those kind of performances happen. At the moment, to find a spot in this team is very difficult. Look at the guys who have been picked. All average well in excess of mid-40s. Unfortunately, you can’t fit everyone in a squad of 15,” Agarkar said in the press conference after BCCI named the Champions Trophy squad.
Nevertheless, Ajit Agarkar feels Karun Nair’s name will be popped up whenever any player suffers bad form or sustain an injury.
“But those performances certainly make you take notice. If there is a loss of form (for a player) or injuries, there’s certainly going to be a conversation around him,” he added.
