Ravichandran Ashwin becomes 7th-highest wicket taker in test history. He picked up 3 wickets in the first day of the second test against New Zealand in Pune.
Before this test Ashwin had 528 wickets in tests. He went past Australia’s Nathan Lyon who has 530 wickets as soon as he picked up Will Young’s wicket. Ashwin is also the highest wicket-taker in the World Test Championship with 190 wickets to his name.
He surpassed Nathan Lyon’s another record of 187 wickets in the World Test Championship. Ashwin now has 531 wickets in test cricket. He averages 23.80 at a strike rate of 50.50. He has 41 wickets in 17 innings in 2024 at an average of 24.90 and a strike rate of 38.40.
The off-spinner has been a consistent performer for India in tests over a decade now. Ashwin is the second-highest wicket-taker for India in test cricket after Anil Kumble’s 619 wickets in 132 matches. He is capable with the bat as well and has 3438 runs in test cricket at an average of 26.44. He has 6 centuries and 14 fifties to his name. Ravichandran Ashwin is ranked 2nd in the ICC Bowlers rankings in test cricket. Jasprit Bumrah is at the top.
Washington Sundar, Ashwin decimates the Kiwis in 2nd test
India included Washington Sundar in the squad after the 8-wicket defeat in the first test. It proved to be an excellent decision as Washington Sundar picked up 7 wickets in the first innings of the second test. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 3 wickets and both off-spinner bundled out the Kiwis for 259 runs in the first innings.
Ashwin picked up the first three wickets and then it was the Washington Sundar show as he picked up a 7-for. Devon Conway (76 runs) and Rachin Ravindra (65 runs) were the only batters with runs under their name for the Kiwis. Mitchell Santner also scored 33 runs.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma received a lot of heat from fans and experts for not bowling Ashwin early on the 5th day of the first game. India included Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Akash Deep in the eleven. They replace KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj respectively.
