TATA IPL

The list of retained players have been announced. A total of 46 players have been retained ahead of the mega auction for the IPL 2025 season. Here is a quick look at all the players that are retained by each of the teams and the purse remaining.

Remember, the total auction purse was increased to INR 120 crore for this edition. Teams could retain as many as six players (a maximum of five capped or a maximum of two uncapped players).

The slabs were divided as 18, 14 and 11 crore for the first three retentions respectively and then it would be followed by 18 and 14 crore respectively for the last two. These are the amounts for the five capped retentions. If all five players retained were capped, then the teams could divide the 75 crore in any fashion they like (which quite a few teams followed). The uncapped player slab was slated at 4 crore. Moreover, any Indian player who has not played international cricket for five years can be retained under the uncapped section.

MUMBAI INDIANS (MI)

Players Retained: 5 – Jasprit Bumrah (18 crore), Hardik Pandya (16.35 crore), Suryakumar Yadav (16.35 crore), Rohit Sharma (16.30 crore), Tilak Varma (8 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 1 (uncapped only)
Purse Remaining: INR 45 crore

After all the chatter around MI and their famous core probably not being in the same side, they have managed to make an excellent deal. They’ve retained all their star Indian players.

Jasprit Bumrah is MI’s top retention. He has been offered INR 18 crore while the other three top players are in the same bracket. Hardik Pandya who has been named as the captain of MI for IPL 2025 has been retained at INR 16.35 crore while Suryakumar Yadav has been retained at the same price as Pandya. Meanwhile, former skipper Rohit Sharma is just below the two at INR 16.30 crore. The fifth retention is Tilak Varma who has been offered INR 8 crore.

MI have a superb core to build their squad around. Four out of their top six is set while they have an all-rounder in Pandya and a gun lead fast bowler in Bumrah. Their focus will be on buying some quality international recruits in the remaining INR 45 crore. Moreover, they have only one RTM card available which they can use only on an uncapped player as they have retained five capped players.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS (CSK)

Players Retained: 5 – Ruturaj Gaikwad (18 crore), Ravindra Jadeja (18 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (13 crore), Shivam Dube (12 crore), MS Dhoni (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 1 (capped or uncapped)
Purse Remaining: INR 55 crore

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja are the top retentions and both players have been offered a sum of INR 18 crore each. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana who has been highly impressive has got a retention sum of INR 13 crore. Shivam Dube who has found a home at CSK and has done very well has been retained for INR 12 crore. All eyes where on MS Dhoni before the retention list came out. However, he has decided to feature in the IPL 2025 and he has been retained as the uncapped player (under the new rule).

CSK have just one RTM card available and they can retain either a capped or uncapped player. They have a total of INR 55 crore left to spend at the auction.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE (RCB)

Players Retained: 3 – Virat Kohli (21 crore), Rajat Patidar (11 crore), Yash Dayal (5 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 3
Purse Remaining: INR 83 crore

There is no surprise that Virat Kohli is RCB’s top retention at INR 21 crore. In fact, there are reports that the 35-year-old may even be back as RCB captain for the upcoming 2025 edition of the IPL. Rajat Patidar who was brilliant for RCB in the 2024 season has been retained at a price of INR 11 crore. Yash Dayal impressed quite a bit with 15 wickets last season and he is the uncapped retention at INR 5 crore.

The likes of Mohammed Siraj, Cameron Green, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell have been released. It’ll be interesting to see whether any of these players are bought back by RCB (directly or by using RTM). Moreover, the three-time finalists could be also on the lookout for a captain (if Kohli doesn’t lead).

DELHI CAPITALS (DC)

Players Retained: 4 – Axar Patel (16.50 crore), Kuldeep Yadav (13.25 crore), Tristan Stubbs (10 crore), Abishek Porel (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 2
Purse Remaining: INR 73 crore

The big news coming out of the Delhi camp is that Rishabh Pant has been released. There were reports of DC not offering him captaincy which led to him not being retained. Axar Patel is the top retention for DC. While his salary is INR 16.50 crore, a sum of INR 18 crore has been deducted from the purse. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav and Tristan Stubbs are the second and third retentions respectively. A total of INR 25 crore has been deducted from their kitty. Abishek Porel is the uncapped player that has been retained by DC at INR 4 crore.

DC is another team that could be looking for a captain in the auction. They have a couple of RTM cards at their disposal.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS (KKR)

Players Retained: 6 – Rinku Singh (13 crore), Varun Chakravarthy (12 crore), Sunil Narine (12 crore), Andre Russell (12 crore), Harshit Rana (4 crore), Ramandeep Singh (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 0
Purse Remaining: INR 51 crore

KKR have maximized the player retentions. They have retained six players and two of them are uncapped. Rinku Singh has been given the top retention at INR 13 crore. The mystery spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine have each been given INR 12 crore. Meanwhile, premier pace-bowling all-rounder Andre Russell is the other retention at INR 12 crore. Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh are the uncapped retentions and both are kept at INR 4 crore.

With KKR has not offered any player INR 18 crore and have spent only INR 57 crore. However, the retentions rules are such that a total of INR 69 crore has been reduced from their purse. The big release was that of Shreyas Iyer who led them to the IPL title in 2024. Hence, KKR will want to search for a captain in the auction.

LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS (LSG)

Players Retained: 5 – Nicholas Pooran (21 crore), Ravi Bishnoi (11 crore) Mayank Yadav (11 crore), Mohsin Khan (4 crore), Ayush Badoni (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 1 (capped or uncapped)
Purse Remaining: INR 69 crore

After what transpired towards the end of the 2024 season, it comes as no surprise that LSG have decided to release their captain KL Rahul. Nicholas Pooran has been named as the top retention which is at INR 21 crore. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and fast bowler Mayank Yadav who attracted a lot of attention last season for his sheer pace are next on the list, both at INR 11 crore. Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni have been retained as the uncapped players, both at INR 4 crore.

Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya are the other big names who have been left out. LSG have one RTM card and they could use it on them. It’ll also be interesting to see if Pooran leads the side or if they go out on the hunt for another skipper in the auction.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD (SRH)

Players Retained: 5 – Heinrich Klaasen (23 crore), Pat Cummins (18 crore), Abhishek Sharma (14 crore), Travis Head (14 crore), Nitish Kumar Reddy (6 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 1 (capped or uncapped)
Purse Remaining: INR 45 crore

SRH have managed to retain most of their big performers from the 2024 IPL season. Moreover, they have retained three overseas names which is the most this season. Henrich Klaasen at INR 23 crore is currently the most expensive player of this season (and the most expensive retention in the history of the IPL). Skipper Pat Cummins who was bought INR 20.50 in last year’s auction has moved down to INR 18 crore. The explosive opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head have been retained at INR 14 crore each. Meanwhile, promising seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been retained at INR 6 crore.

SRH have spent INR 75 crore for their five retentions. They have one RTM option available which they can use on a capped or uncapped player.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS (RR)

Players Retained: Sanju Samson (18 crore), Yashasvi Jaiswal (18 crore), Riyan Parag (14 crore), Dhruv Jurel (14 crore), Shimron Hetmyer (11 crore), Sandeep Sharma (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 0
Purse Remaining: INR 41 crore

RR have spent the most amount of money in the retentions and have retained six players. Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag are expected names on the retention list. The former two have been given the top retention at INR 18 crore each while Parag slots in at INR 14 crore. Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer are slightly surprising names. Jurel has been given INR 14 crore which is 70 times the amount he was bought for (INR 20 lakh) in the 2022 auction.

Sandeep Sharma has been retained as the uncapped player and he is the only bowler among the six players retained. There are no RTM cards available for the 2008 IPL champions. The retention of Jurel and Hetmyer comes as a surprise largely due to the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Jos Buttler being released.

PUNJAB KINGS (PBKS)

Players Retained: 2 – Shashank Singh (5.5 crore), Prabhsimran Singh (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 4 (capped only)
Purse Remaining: INR 110.5 crore

Punjab has retained the lowest number of players and they are the only team to not retain any capped players. Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh are the only ones to be retained by the 2014 IPL finalists. Shashank has got INR 5.5 crore while Prabhsimran has been retained at INR 4 crore. That ensures PBKS to go into the auction with almost a clean slate and the highest purse available (INR 110.5 crore).

Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Kagiso Rabada are notable exclusions. PBKS have four RTM cards (they can use that on capped players only as they have already retained two uncapped) at their disposal and they could well buy a few of their stars from last IPL season back at a lower cost.

GUJARAT TITANS (GT)

Players Retained: 5 – Rashid Khan (18 crore), Shubman Gill (16.50 crore), Sai Sudharsan (8.50 crore), Rahul Tewatia (4 crore), Shahrukh Khan (4 crore).
Right To Match (RTM) cards available: 1 (capped only)
Purse Remaining: INR 69 crore

GT have managed to retain two of their big stars in Rashid Khan and Shubman Gill. The Afghanistan superstar is the top pick at INR 18 crore while Gill has settled for a sum of INR 16.50 crore. Sai Sudharshan is the other promising prospect that GT have managed to retain at INR 8.5 crore. Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan have managed to bag a deal of INR 4 crore each as they are the two uncapped retentions.

The big names like Mohammed Shami and David Miller have been let go. But either one of them could be retained in the auction using the RTM card.
