Former Indian and current Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane played his 40th First-Class century — a superb 192-ball 102 — on Sunday at Sophia Gardens, helping Leicestershire resist Glamorgan in the County Championship Division Two match.

For almost two years prior to this day, the senior Indian batsman had been waiting for a First-Class hundred. Rahane’s 39th century was scored during the Ranji Trophy while leading Mumbai against Assam in January 2023. Since July 2023, he has had no involvement with the national team and was not selected for next week’s Duleep Trophy.

On the last day of a four-day game, the 36-year-old was involved in a crucial 183 runs partnership for the fourth wicket with Australia’s Peter Handscomb who was batting on 107.

When Leicestershire were 74 for three, Rahane came into bat as he joined Handscomb in keeping alive the team’s hopes of saving a match. In a previous context, Glamorgan’s Colin Ingram smacked career-best unbeaten 257 leading his team to an enormous total of 550 for nine declared thus gaining a first innings lead by 299 runs.

By stumps on third evening Rahane remained not out at 47 while Handscomb had not been dismissed at 33 when bad light interrupted play during 21.2 overs remaining while Leicestershire finished at 144 with 3 wickets down yet to get all out still trailing by 155 runs.

Mason Crane, the Glamorgan leg-spinner, dismissed both Indian and Australian batsmen

Mason Crane are the Glamorgan leg-spinner that dropped both Indian and Australian. Rahane has made 12 test hundreds and three one day international tons out of which he scored 42 runs off 67 balls during first innings. In ten games this year, Rahane was able to get an impressive figure of378 runs for Leicestershire’s One-Day Cup with four fifties on.

Earlier on this season, the senior warrior made his maiden appearance for Leicestershire, after missing out on a chance to play for them last year. In first class cricket Rahane has a total of 13,387 runs from 190 matches. He has scored 5,077 runs in 85 Tests with 12 hundreds.
