Former Indian legendary spinner Ravi Ashwin comes out in support of Virat Kohli amidst his dry run in international cricket. The now-retired spinner urges Virat to explore his strengths and advises him to take up an aggressive approach ahead of the three-match ODI series.
Playing an aggressive brand of cricket has benefited team India immensely as the Blues have emerged victorious in 28 out of 31 matches played. Moreover, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, also insists on adopting an all-out aggressive mindset which has allowed the Indian domination to continue. Virat on the other hand, has played at his own pace while playing his part in helping India win crucial ODI games.
What’s the advice for the out-of-form run machine?
The out-of-form run machine is just a few good innings away from regaining his lost legacy according to Ashwin. The veteran spinner opines that Kohli does not need to tinker with his game and advises him to play to his strengths.
"Virat has to play to his strengths, and if he regains form, then there is nothing like it for the Indian cricket team. He doesn't have to change his game at all. Honestly, what is the hurry in ODIs? It is important to do what is right by the 50-over format."

Virat has had a forgettable 2024 where his average across all formats took a severe dent. In the previously concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy series, Kohli failed to fire with the bat big time, and apart from his Perth hundred, Kohli’s average stood at a dismal low of 9. However, the ace batter had a swashbuckling 2023 becoming the first batter to reach 50 ODI centuries, and also concluded the World Cup on a high averaging almost 59.
India are slated to play three ODI fixtures against England starting on February 6 before heading for the Champions Trophy starting on February 19. Given the high stakes of the marquee tournament, it becomes absolutely imperative for Kohli and the other senior men to step up their game. His performance in the upcoming tournament will determine his longevity for India in the white-ball format.
