England’s Joe Root has broken Sachin Tendulkar as most runs in the 4th innings of test cricket.
England defeated New Zealand in a dominating way in the first test at Christchurch. Root who got out for a duck in the first innings scored 23* runs to see his side over the line.
After this inning, Root has surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 1625 test runs in the 4th innings. Sachin achieved this feat in 60 innings and Root gets past him in 49 test innings.
Joe Root now has 1630 test runs in the 4th innings. Sachin is in the 2nd spot with 1625 runs. Former England captain Alastair Cook is in number 3 with 1611 runs in 53 innings. Former South African captain Graeme Smith is in the 4th spot with 1611 runs in 41 innings. West Indian great Shivnarine Chanderpaul has 1580 runs in 49 innings and he’s in the 5th spot.
Joe Root 3144 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar in most runs in test cricket
This was Root’s 150th test match. He got out for a duck in the first innings and joined legends like Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh who also got out for a duck in their 150th test.
Root now has 12,777 runs in his test career. He’s 3144 runs behind Sachin’s record of most runs in test cricket (15,921). He’s 5th in the list of most runs in test cricket. Sachin is followed by Ricky Ponting (13,378 runs), Jacques Kallis (13,289 runs) and Rahul Dravid (13,288 runs).
Root needs 601 runs to become the 2nd highest run-scorer in test cricket. It will be interesting to see if he can achieve this feat in the remaining two tests against the Kiwis in this tour.
The 2nd test of the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy between New Zealand and England will start on 6th December 2025 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
