The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) will start on 23rd November. Shreyas Iyer will lead Mumbai in the tournament. Opener Prithvi Shaw has been included in the squad as well.
Iyer has the experience of leading IPL franchises. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their 3rd title in IPL 2024. Delhi Capitals also played the IPL 2020 final under the middle-order batter.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced the squad ahead of the tournament. Experienced batter Ajinkya Rahane who leads Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy will play under Iyer. According to sources, Rahane was informed earlier about this decision.
Opening batter Prithvi Shaw also returns to the squad. He was dropped from the Ranji Trophy team to work on his fitness. Shivam Dube, Musheer Khan, and Tushar Deshpande were not selected. The MCA cited their injuries recoveries as a key reason for their exclusion from the squad.
A source said, “Iyer has been chosen to lead the Mumbai T20 team, and Shaw has been included as well. Rahane will play· under Iyer’s captaincy, as the MCA believes Iyer is the ideal candidate for this format”.

Shreyas Iyer and Prithvi Shaw will be in IPL 2025 mega-auction
In surprising developments, Iyer who led KKR to a title in IPL 2024 was released from the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Prithvi Shaw too was released from the Delhi Capitals alongside their skipper Rishabh Pant.
Both of them will be available at the auction and looking for a new franchise. Iyer will be in the first Marquee set and has set his base price at INR 2 crores. Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw will be in Batter Set 2 and has set a base price of INR 75 lacs ahead of the auction.
