The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday, September 28, announced a new match fee structure for players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, announced the historic decision made by the governing body on his social media platform.
Each player will be rewarded INR 7.5 lakhs per game in addition to their lucrative contracts in the IPL. Shah emphasizes that the move aims to “celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances” in the tournament. He also disclosed that each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crore to cover the match fees in the upcoming IPL. He noted that if a player competes in all league games in a season, he could earn a substantial amount of INR 1.05 crore.
“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players!” Jay Shah wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In the interim, all IPL franchises are likely to be permitted to retain five players, along with the option to use one Right-to-Match (RTM) card during the much-awaited Mega Auction. According to NDTV, the retention rules are set to be finalized ahead of the BCCI’s 93rd Annual General Meeting, which is scheduled for September 29, Sunday. Additionally, the report did not specify the number of Indian or overseas players who can be included in the retained list.
“It could not yet be confirmed how many Indian players can be part of the set of retained players or whether there will be a cap on retained overseas players. What is also unknown are the retention slabs,” the report read.
The report indicated that the overall budget for each franchise could reach INR 115-120 crore. Notably, the salary cap set during the Mega Auction three years ago was INR 90 crore.
“The overall purse could not be confirmed either, but it is understood it will hover around the INR 115-120 crore mark,” the report added.
Meanwhile, the date and venue for the upcoming Mega Auction is likely scheduled for the second week of November.
