India captain Rohit Sharma is renowned for his effortless big-hitting across all formats of the game. The opening batter is on the verge of achieving a record in India’s upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh, with the opening match commencing from Thursday, September 19 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. If he manages to hit eight maximums in the series, he can surpass Virender Sehwag’s record of most sixes in Test cricket among Indian batters. Sehwag ended his Test career with 91 sixes from 104 matches and Rohit currently holds the second position, having hit 84 sixes in 59 Test matches.
Additionally, the 37-year-old currently holds the record for the most sixes in international cricket, having smashed 620 sixes in 483 matches. Only former West Indies’ explosive opener Chris Gayle is close to him on the list with 533 sixes.
England Test skipper, Ben Stokes, currently holds the record for most sixes, having smashed 131 in 105 matches. Current England coach and former New Zealand batter Brendon McCullum holds the second place in the list with 107 sixes in 101 tests while Australian great Adam Gilchrist trails behind him with 100 sixes in 96 matches.
The opening Test against Bangladesh in Chennai will be India’s first match after a 45-day hiatus. Rohit is now gearing up to lead the side and would be keen to ensure a series whitewash to boost their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final for the third consecutive time. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will be heading into the series boldly, following a historic 2-0 Test series triumph in Pakistan last month.
Rohit has been stunning in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle, having amassed 700 runs in nine matches at an average of 46.66. He has scored a total of three centuries and as many half-centuries. The 37-year-old will aim to carry forward his form and could potentially break two more records in the upcoming series.
In WTC history, he has scored a total of nine hundreds and is the Indian player with the most centuries in the competition. If he scores a century in the upcoming series, he can become the first Indian to reach 10 centuries in the WTC. Additionally, he currently has 48 centuries across all formats for India. If he scores two more centuries in the upcoming series against Bangladesh, he will achieve the milestone of 50 centuries across all formats, becoming only the third Indian to do so after Sachin Tendulkar (100) and Virat Kohli (80).
