Rashid Khan targets 1000-wicket landmark in T20 cricket

633 wickets! That is the wickets tally of Rashid Khan in T20 cricket. The star Afghanistan leg-spinner went past Dwayne Bravo’s tally of 631 wickets which was the record for the most wickets in the history of T20 cricket.

It was in October 2015 that Rashid made his T20 debut in an international game against Zimbabwe. He hasn’t looked back since. No bowler has dominated T20 cricket like Rashid ever since his debut.

Since his debut, no bowler is even close to his wickets tally. The second-best on the wicket-takers list in T20s is Imran Tahir with 404 wickets in this period.

However, Rashid is in no mood to stop. His next target is to reach the four-figure mark i.e. 1000 wickets in T20 cricket. He believes if he is fit and firing, he could even scale the landmark in the next four years or so.

That is the target. It is going to be massive to get 1000 wickets. Yeah, if I am fit and I am doing well, that is something which will be the biggest achievement to take: 1000 wickets in T20s. And I can only just think about it, how good it would be and how it will be to have those four digits of wickets. That is something which is going to be unbelievable. But yes, hopefully, hopefully I am fit. I feel like if I continue to play the cricket I have been playing next three-and a-half-to-four years, I feel like I can get there,” Rashid Khan was quoted saying to ESPNCricinfo.

Rashid was proud of the fact that he achieved the feat of most T20 wickets in just over nine years. His aim is to continue to give his best and make it as big as possible.

Especially when I look at my career, it is not that long, where I feel like, say I played 15-20 years and this record has been broken and it is under my name now. It is just nine years. And that is how long DJ Bravo held that record for. But it is a massive, massive achievement for me because if I look back in 2014-15, I never ever thought that I will play T20 Internationals and leagues all around the world. I never ever had that in my mind. I will only try my best to continue and make it as bigger as possible,” the Afghanistan leg-spinner said.

Dwayne Bravo ‘so happy’ that Rashid broke his record

Bravo held the record for most T20 wickets since April 2016. He had gone past Lasith Malinga at that stage and held the feat ever since. But the former West Indian all-rounder is happy that Rashid went past him and told the Afghanistan star that he totally deserves it.

He was so happy and said: you are the one who break this record. You totally deserve all this.” He has always been very supportive and we had some great times and in T20 World Cup as well when he was Afghanistan bowling coach,” Rashid added.

Rashid Khan currently has 633 wickets from 461 matches in T20 cricket. His economy rate reads 6.49. He is just 26 years old and has a lot of cricket left in him. There is absolutely no doubt that the 1000-wicket mark is within reach for the leg-spinner, considering he is arguably one of the most sought-after players in T20 leagues around the world.
