West Indies knocked out England from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. West Indies won the game by 8 wickets on the back of an excellent opening partnership from skipper Hayley Matthews (50 runs) and Qiana Joseph (52 runs). Deandra Dottin scored 27 runs and saw her side over the line.
West Indies won the toss and invited England to bat first. England lost three quick wickets including both their openers who chased down 109 runs in just 10 overs in the last game against Scotland. Nat-Sciver Brunt (57* runs) then steadied the ship alongside skipper Heather Knight (27 runs) who had to leave and didn’t take the field during England’s bowling due to an injury.
The West Indian bowlers then never allowed the English batters to get going and restricted them to 141/7 after 20 overs. Afy Fletcher continued her good form and picked up 3 wickets. West Indian skipper who was playing her 100th T20I game performed with the ball as well picking up a couple of wickets.
Drop Catches Cost England, West Indies helped South Africa
Qiana Joseph opened the innings in the absence of Stafanie Taylor and took on the bowling from the start. England dropped as many as 5 catches which cost them big time as the openers put up 102 runs for the West Indies. England then picked up a couple of quick wickets before Deandra Dottin scored a quickfire 27 when the game looked like going into a tricky situation.
Nat Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn picked up one wicket each for England. Not many people had expected the 2016 T20 champions to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. South Africa women also benefited from West Indies’ triumph in this game as they also qualified for the semi-finals after England’s net-run rate took a beating in this match.
Defending champions Australia won all four games in the group stage and was the first team to qualify for the semi-finals. New Zealand then defeated Pakistan yesterday and confirmed their place. Now we have West Indies and South Africa from Group B for the semi-finals. The semi-finals will start on 17th October with Australia taking on South Africa in Dubai. West Indies will be against New Zealand on 18th October in Sharjah. The final will be played on 20th October in Dubai.
