The Indian Women’s team secured a dominating 211-run victory over West Indies Women on Sunday (December 22) in the first fixture of the three-match ODI series. The game took place at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
The Caribbean team won the toss and chose to bowl first, which misfired them dearly. The Indian opening pair of Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal provided a good start to the Indian side. The visitors were close to dismissing Pratika early on two occasions. At first, the replay showed the ball touched her gloves and was caught by the keeper, however, the umpire deemed her not-out and received a reprieve in the 10th over as well.
West Indies dropped another catch of Pratika in the 22nd over, but Hayley Matthews secured a terrific caught-and-bowled dismissal two overs later to send her packing for 40 off 69. Their 110-run partnership certainly saw Mandhana looking in total control, as she found consistent boundaries.
Mandhana continued to produce impressive shots all around the park and never looked in discomfort. However, an unconventional sweep shot resulted in her getting trapped LBW for 91 off 102 by Zaida James. With this knock, she also broke the record for most international runs (1,602) in a single calendar year.
Harleen Deol continued the team’s momentum by scoring 44 off 50 and stitching a 76-run stand with Harmanpreet Kaur.
Kaur played a quickfire knock of 34 off 23 and got support from Richa Ghosh (26 off 13), which pushed the Indian team’s score past 250.
Thereafter, Jemimah Rodrigues (31 off 19) and Deepti Sharma (14* off 12) helped the hosts to post a 314-run total in 50 overs. James was the pick of the bowlers for the Caribbean team with figures of 5/45.
Renuka Singh stuns West Indies Women
Chasing 315, West Indies Women team got off to a disastrous start. Qiana Joseph (0) was run-out before facing a ball. The third over witnessed Renuka Singh inducing an edge of captain Hayley Matthews (0) to send her packing.
Renuka got rid of dangerous Deandra Dottin (8) by breaching her defense with a beautiful seam representation. Titas Sadhu also got the ball to seam inward and broke the furniture of Rashada Williams (3).
Thereafter, Shemaine Campbelle (21) and Afy Fletcher (24) could only return with significant contributions, as West Indies were bundled out for 103. Renuka emerged as the wrecker-in-chief with figures of 5/29 for the Indian team.
The second ODI fixture between both teams will be played on Tuesday, December 24.
