Cricket Rewind

There were plenty of happenings around the cricket world, especially in the last week. Many high-profile matches were played during the last week around the world including the franchise cricket leagues as well.

India and Australia were battling it out in the 5th final test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, the Big Bash League is going on in Australia and there’s plenty more action we witnessed. This is a weekly cricket rewind of all the major events that happened in cricket in the last week.

So let’s get straightaway into it:

Weekly cricket rewind from the 22-yard

1. Australia regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade

The biggest happening in the last week came from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India. Australia, after losing the first test at Perth, came back strongly and won the series 3-1. The Gabba test ended in a draw.

The Aussies looked determined from the 2nd test in Adelaide and continued their good form throughout the series. Their batters bowled well and the bowlers did a great job. On the other hand, India was below average as a side, especially in the batting department. None of the batters including big names like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma performed consistently.

The bowlers too looked ineffective overall in the series with Jasprit Bumrah being the only bowler who did well. Travis Head was the highest run-scorer of the series with 448 runs at an average of 56 including 2 hundred and a fifty. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the best batter for the visitors amassing 391 runs in the 5 games including a century and 2 fifties.

Jasprit Bumrah was adjudged the ‘Player of the Series’ for his 32 wickets in the 5 games at an average of just 13.06.

2. Sam Konstas vs Jasprit Bumrah and Team India

19-year-old Sam Konstas made his test debut for Australia in the 4th test of the series at the MCG. The youngster played fearlessly and got into a heated exchange with Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the 5th test at the SCG. He attacked Japsprit Bumrah in his debut innings and succeeded but Bumrah got the better of him at the end.

He became the talk of the series as he also got into a bit of tussle with Virat Kohli in the 4th test after Kohli allegedly ‘shouldered’ after he was dismissed. Konstas scored 113 runs in 2 games at an average of 28.25 including a fifty on his debut innings. He played aggressively and tried to take on the Indian bowlers.

3. Rohit Sharma stepped down from the SCG Test, Virat Kohli’s poor form in BGT 2024-25

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had a forgettable series as he scored only 31 runs in 5 innings at an average of 6.20 with a highest score of just 10 runs. Rohit didn’t play in the 5th test at the SCG and later said that he decided to step down from the game owing to his poor form with the bat.

Earlier, rumours were that he’ll announce his retirement from the longest format but he denied all that and said that the decision was taken after considering the team’s interest and nothing else.

Veteran batter Virat Kohli too was below average in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Kohli scored a century in the second innings of the Perth test but failed to get going in the rest of the series. He scored only 90 runs in the 8 innings barring that century.

4. Horrific collision between Sydney Thunder’s Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft

A horrific collision happened between Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft during the 22nd match of the Big Bash League 2024-25 between the Perth Scorchers and the Sydney Thunder. During the latter half of Perth’s innings Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft collided with each other attempting a catch.

It was a serious collision and Daniel Sams was taken out to the hospital on the stretcher. Cameron Bancroft also suffered a fractured nose and shoulder. Both the players are now doing good but will miss a good chunk of the remained of the tournament. Bancroft seems to be ruled out of the tournament.

After 24 matches in the BBL, the Sydney Sixers are at the top of the points table with the Sydney Thunder being at number 2. They are followed by the Hobart Hurricanes and the Perth Scorchers. Cooper Connolly (272 runs) is the highest run-scorer of the season with Tom Rogers, Henry Thornton and Lloyd Pope being the join-highest wicket-takers with 11 wickets each.

The 2nd test between South Africa and Pakistan started at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Opening batter Ryan Rickelton scored a double-century (259 runs) in the first innings. The Proteas are in the driver’s seat on the back of brilliant performances from the batting unit. Skipper Temba Bavuma (106 runs), Kyle Verreynne (100 runs) and Marco Jansen (62 runs) also contributed with the bat.

Pakistan got bowled out for 194 runs in the first innings and scored 152 runs in the second-innings following-on. They are 269 runs behind South Africa at the time of writing this on the 3rd Day of the test match.
