Deepti Sharma has been named as the captain of the UP Warriorz (UPW) for the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Regular skipper Alyssa Healy was ruled out of the tournament because of a right foot stress injury.
This will be the first time Deepti will be leading in the WPL. However, she has led teams in domestic cricket over the years. The off-spinning all-rounder has captained Bengal in the past and even led East Zone in the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal One Day Trophy last year. In fact, she was one of the three captains for the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2022. The UP-born all-rounder was the captain of team Velocity.
Deepti has been one of the most consistent performers for UPW over the last couple of years. She was magnificent in the WPL 2024 where she amassed 295 runs in eight games at a strike-rate of 136.57. With the ball, she took 10 wickets at an economy of 7.23.
The 27-year-old was delighted to be named as UPW skipper for the 2025 edition.
“I am delighted and honoured to be named captain of the UP Warriorz, which is a team from my home state. The UP Warriorz has a fantastic squad, and we are confident that we will entertain our fans with the Warriorz brand of cricket, at the WPL this season as well,” Deepti Sharma was quoted saying in a release.
UPW have named West Indies all-rounder Chinnelle Henry as Healy’s replacement for the WPL 2025.
UP Warriorz to play three home games
The WPL 2025 will be played over four venues for the first time. In 2023, it was played only in Mumbai before Bengaluru and Delhi hosted the 2024 edition. However, this time, there are four venues and hence, UPW are set to play three games at their home ground (Ekana Cricket Stadium) in Lucknow.
Thus, Deepti who hails from Agra is excited to play in her home state and said, “We can’t wait to play in Lucknow in front of our home fans, and hope to inspire the next generation of women athletes.”
The WPL 2025 kicks off on the 14th of February in Vadodara with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Gujarat Giants. UPW face Gujarat Giants in their first game of the season which is scheduled to be played on the 16th of February.
